Mortimer Community College

As part of the Creative Change Explorer programme, and to mark the global campaign of World Environment Day 2007, MORTIMER COMPREHENSIVE SCHOOL in South Shields put on a special event which was the culmination of 6-weeks hard work. 35 Year 7 and 8 students collaborated with Northeast-based creative artists: JOHNNY DEEPER (MC - lyricist); ROBBY GRAHAM and CONOR O'KANE (Street Dancers); PAUL RICHARDSON (Graffiti Artist / Teacher) and EMILY BARBER (Film Maker).

All of the activities were documented on camera as the young people worked with a local filmmaker to ensure this fantastic experience was captured for prosperity. The film, Climate Change…….is Coming, can be see on this site.

Louise MCDonnell, Extended Schools Manager at Mortimer Comprehensive School in South Shields, was impressed how the students adapted towards their chosen creative discipline, for example MC-ing, where they learnt about the skills involved in lyric writing and the appropriate techniques needed to get a message across. Louise commented that "Everyone involved enjoyed this project and, most importantly, it engaged young people in the climate change debate by using art forms relevant to them."
